Hi!
“I’ve tried everything,” Emma told me during our first consultation. At 38, she had been struggling with debilitating fatigue for over six years—a journey that had taken her to multiple specialists and resulted in diagnoses ranging from depression to chronic fatigue syndrome to “just being a busy mom.”
Despite trying numerous approaches—from prescription medications to various diets, from supplements to meditation—her exhaustion persisted. She could barely make it through her workday, had abandoned most social activities, and felt guilty about her limited energy for her two young children.
“The worst part is that all my tests come back normal,” she explained. “I’ve had my thyroid checked repeatedly, comprehensive bloodwork, even sleep studies. Everyone tells me I should feel fine, but I can barely function.”
Emma’s frustration reflected a common experience for those with persistent fatigue: conventional testing often misses crucial underlying factors, particularly certain types of infections that can drain energy without creating obvious diagnostic markers.
After a detailed history revealed several potential exposure events—including a severe case of mononucleosis in college and significant black mold exposure in a previous home—we conducted more specialized testing than Emma had previously received.
The results were revealing: evidence of persistent Epstein-Barr virus reactivation, significant mycotoxin levels suggesting ongoing mold illness, and markers of mitochondrial dysfunction likely resulting from these chronic infections. These findings explained why previous treatments had provided minimal relief—they were addressing symptoms without resolving the underlying infectious drivers.
We created a comprehensive protocol focused on:
1. Strengthening immune function to help control the viral reactivation
2. Supporting detoxification pathways to address mycotoxin burden
3. Targeted nutrients to restore mitochondrial function
4. Inflammation modulation to break the cycle of immune activation
5. Sleep optimization to support natural recovery processes
The improvement in Emma’s energy wasn’t immediate—which is typical with infection-driven fatigue—but followed a clear upward trajectory:
* Within the first month, her most severe fatigue began to lift
* By three months, she was experiencing sustained periods of normal energy
* At six months, she had resumed many activities she’d abandoned years earlier
* After nine months, she described her energy as “90% restored”
“What makes me both grateful and frustrated,” Emma shared at our one-year follow-up, “is that these infections were driving my fatigue for years while I was told it was all stress, depression, or just normal fatigue for a working mom. Finding and addressing the real causes gave me my life back.”
Emma’s story highlights why functional medicine approaches to fatigue often succeed where conventional methods fall short. Hidden infections—including viral reactivation, tick-borne diseases, and mold illness—frequently drive persistent fatigue through several mechanisms:
* They create ongoing immune activation that depletes energy resources
* The inflammatory response disrupts hormone and neurotransmitter function
* Mitochondrial function becomes compromised by oxidative stress
* Sleep architecture changes in response to immune signaling
* Metabolism shifts to accommodate the energy demands of chronic immune activation
These infections often don’t appear on standard tests and may not present with obvious symptoms beyond the fatigue itself—making them easy to miss in conventional evaluations that focus primarily on ruling out serious disease rather than identifying subtle drivers of energy depletion.
If you’ve experienced persistent fatigue despite normal test results and multiple treatment attempts, consider whether hidden infections might be playing a role in your energy challenges. A comprehensive functional medicine evaluation can often identify these factors when standard approaches have missed them.
Next week, we’ll explore the critical relationship between mitochondrial health and energy production—and how supporting these cellular power plants can transform fatigue that hasn’t responded to other approaches.
